In response to the pandemic’s impact on education, the UK government created a series of programmes to improve access to devices, support reliable connectivity, and provision cloud platforms for institutions that lacked one. However, staff and students had different skills levels or readiness to adopt remote learning even within the same institution. Hence the need existed, and still does, to provide resilience and flexibility when supporting equitable technology adoption.
Report by OECD
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) produced a report in 2020 on how to radically reimagine teaching and learning powered by digital technology. It concluded that remote classrooms, as seen during COVID, are not the same as smart ones –to realise the potential of technology fully, schools must now ‘dive into digital’ with a reimagined role for teachers and move away from the traditional front of class delivery of information and knowledge.
